Biografía
His first contact with painting began at the age of 14. He began his artistic studies at the School of Arts and Artistic Crafts of Zaragoza in 1964. When he finished his studies, he entered the painting studio of the painter Alejandro Cañada. Later he studied Fine Arts in Barcelona and Bilbao. His first works follow an academic line that he immediately abandons to elaborate a work influenced by the abstract expressionism.
1970 - 1979
He begins his artistic career with the first group of exhibitions in his hometown, which will be followed by other Spanish and French cities. In these first years, an intimate plastic language is consolidated in his work, influenced by the treatment of light by Goya and Rembrandt. He made several stays and trips to different European countries to deepen and get in touch with the pictorial reality of the moment.
In 1976, he carried out his first individual exhibition in Valladolid, which was followed by other exhibitions in Zaragoza (Palacio Provincial, Goya Gallery and Provincial Museum), Ciudad Real (Andrade Gallery) and Pontevedra (Palacio Provincial).
He won his first prizes in various national and international competitions and biennials. Among others, he got the Bronze Medal of Bordeaux (1976), the Silver Medal of Bilbao Biennial (1977), the Silver Medal of Bordeaux (1997), the Silver Medal of Felanitx City in Mallorca (1978), the Bronze Medal of Pontevedra Biennial (1979) and the accessit of St George Prize in Zaragoza (1979).
1980 - 1989
In the early 1980s, he felt that his expressive language had reached the end of a stage and decided to settle down for a period in Barcelona. From that moment on his painting becomes more abstract, gestural and material. During this stage, he also obtains several prizes at national level such as the Silver Medal City of Logroño (1982), the Silver Medal of the National Painting Contest of Teruel (1982), the Gold Medal of the National Painting Contest of Huel (1987) and the Gold Medal Prize San Jorge of Teruel (1987).
These are some of the most important collective and individual exhibitions: Cop d'Ull Gallery (Lérida, 1983), Berruet Gallery (Logroño, 1983), Quórum Gallery (Madrid, 1985), Provincial Museum of Zaragoza (1986), Veruela Monastery (Zaragoza, 1989), International Competition in Nuremberg (Germany, 1980), Palacio de la Virreina (Barcelona, 1980), Bordeaux Competition (France, 1980), Joan Miró Foundation in different Catalan towns (1982), Palacio de Pedralbes (Barcelona, 1985) and in La Lonja ( Zaragoza, 1988).
His interest in other cultures led him to make several trips to Africa and the Middle East, experiences that would later be reflected in some of his works.
He works in other disciplines such as sculpture where he explores and investigates the possibilities of different materials such as wood, Calatorao stone, marble, granite, and even ceramics as a sculptural element, recreating in one part of his works a universal and simple element such as the nail.
In a continuous exploration of other techniques, media, and supports, in 1984 he created, together with other authors, the work "Videoplástica", one of the first works of video art in Aragon.
1990 - 1999
In the early 90s he held an exhibition at the Aljafería Palace in Zaragoza and 1991 he was awarded a grant by the Provincial Council of Zaragoza to carry out a sculpture project with stays in different national quarries. Two years later, he created the sculpture "Brisa", carved in grey granite and placed in the square of the Town Hall in O'Grove (Pontevedra).
Faithful to the non-conformity and demand with the work he develops, after his last individual exhibition in the mid-90s he makes a long parenthesis in the exhibition shows and dedicates himself to deepen his discourse and plastic research.
2000 - 2011
He begins to work on the project "The Earth's Crust", whose discourse is articulated around the concept of limit concerning the frontier nature and borderline character of being; the limit in a positive aspect, a frontier space between opposite worlds and at the same time a space of communication and mediation. The first production of these works was presented in 2006 at the Ruizanglada Gallery in Zaragoza.
The continuation of this project will be the work Sequences of the reef, a set of 12 pieces, where the limit is conceptualized in the reef, a frontier space between life and death, between beginning and end, sensitive to the mutations of time. This work will be exhibited in 2008 at Galería A del Arte in Zaragoza.
Following the previous line, his latest projects are based on an introspective work around the human being
